In Japanese, the word "Asama" is connected with volcanoes. In Japanese mythology, "Sakuya-hime" is both the cherry blossom princess and the protector of humanity from Mount Fuji's eruptions. According to legend, the Yatsugatake Mountains were once higher than Mount Fuji, but out of jealousy Sakuya lowered them in her wrath. Today, protective shrines to Sakuya surround Mount Kirishima and are regularly destroyed by volcanic activity.
